Todays 31 March Devonport Greyhound meeting has been cancelled.

The meeting has been cancelled because the Devonport Agricultural and Pastoral Society Inc (which owns the Devonport Showgrounds site) has refused entry to the site racing participants.

Tasracing is not aware of any racing participant or other industry stakeholders having contracted or having been exposed to Coronavirus.

Tasracing is seeking advice as to its position and will provide a further update in due course.

imo they are gambling with participants.

they are basically continuing until somebody tests positive.

BUT, by that stage how many people would it have been passed onto?

how many people will get sick? how many will die?

lets hope it doesn't come to that hey. time will tell.

GRVs Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU) has initiated numerous changes in line with Government social distancing protocols to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

They are as follows:

Minimise the number of Stewards on track from five to three
Isolation of the Stewards to a specific geographical region proximity of track to place of residence
Stewards remain in teams of three and do not crossover or have contact with other teams
Team of specialist Stewards working remotely in isolation to support the on-track team/s
Removal of on course Data Operators, function done remotely
Skeleton staff on track only, non-essential staff were removed from race meetings
Biosecurity and hygiene measures fully implemented
Demarcation of maximum occupants placed on all indoor areas of tracks/clubs
Greyhound identification processes are limited to scanning ear brand checks have ceased
Pre-race parading has ceased
People involved in movement of Greyhounds from kennel to starting boxes are keeping 3-5 metres distance
Starting box loading process modified to ensure separation distances can be adhered to. Greyhounds are now being loaded one at a time with handlers moving out of the loading zone immediately after loading their dog.
Pens are being disinfected after use an abundance of pens are being provided as single use
Removed the need to use numbered bibs for handlers & catchers
Vet checks for pre-kennelling and pre-race are being conducted in the open air, where possible (see above)
The Victorian Racing Tribunal are conducting hearings via teleconference and other technology platforms
Floor markers in place to manage movements of people and distancing at race meeting in various areas
Swab kits are being handled by one person to ensure singular holdings
Reduced the congregation of catchers allowing one person to catch more than one Greyhound without penalty
Employees are travelling to work alone in their vehicle
Paperless transactions implemented on track, where possible
The investigation/prosecution brief preparation process has moved to paperless

A couple of things to ponder over ..
Stewards remain in teams of three and do not crossover or have contact with other teams
So its ok to Isolate the Stewards to Regions then why not do the same for the Trainers and the dogs .....

Pull the pin ..STOP RACING ...Dont risk our old timers lifes the GRV are playing Russian roulette....

Don't agree about a shutdown. Racing and life should proceed as best we can. If someone is concerned for their health they can make that choice to hybernate or make arrangements for someone to handle for them.
Keep calm, carry on. Keep racing

India has it's 1.4 billion in lock down so wait until it hits all of those Countries where hospitals are basically non existent

We should not be so quick to give up our liberty. I agree we should be doing everything to protect the vulnerable but when will we switch from locking up the healthy to protect the few vulnerable. The cost will be devastating to everyone. When we have 1000s committing suicede due to financial ruin and racing has no money it will be shut down.
I am 38 and healthy. My parents are both in there late 70s with medical conditions. They are the ones proclaiming my exact words. The cure is worse than the disease. We should be moving to isolating and helping the vulnerable and everyone else get on with life.

I will throw my two cents in even though I'm not in Australia. You have no idea what you're in for if you don't take precautionary measures. Don't be like China, S.Korea, Italy,France,Spain and the U.S. You will either make history and get ahead of Covid 19 before it gets a foothold in Australia or you will repeat history and do what the other countries have done.

About 80-82% of people that get the virus have little or no problems and some don't know they have it. It is the 18-20% that is overwhelming hospitals and some are dying that shouldn't have to die. There is a shortage of masks, gowns and respirators. New York city is right now the epicenter of the world and they are putting two people on one respirator. The morgues can't keep up and there are refrigerated trailers in front of the hospitals where they are storing the dead.

Remember the hospitals already had a lot of either sick people or people that had an operation for injuries recovering in them and these people also need care. Central Park in NYC now has hospital tents to try and take some of the overflow. Two navy ships that can handle 1,000 patients each have been deployed to NYC and Los Angeles.

In Boston some of the colleges have offered to let the city take over some of their dorms to use as hospitals and the offer was accepted.

Convention centers in NYC, New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago and more now are filled with hospital beds.

Doctors and nurses are testing positive with the virus and are mostly on self-quarantine in their homes, but some are in critical condition and others have already died. There are no more doctors and nurses to take the place of these sick and dead and that stresses the whole healthcare community even more. Some states that have nursing programs in their colleges are graduating the seniors in the next week instead of in May. This is being done so these nurses can help out if only with the other patients. There is a call out for retired doctors and nurses that want to come back and help to call their hospital, and a number of retirees have made the call.

We can still go for a walk, but not in a group unless it is people in your house that are living together. So no basketball games in your driveway with neighbors as they want us to try and keep 6 feet between people. In the supermarkets many items are cleaned out like hand sanitizer, paper towels and for some reason toilet paper. Meats are gone and as more come in they get wiped out as people are stocking their freezers in case we have to stay in our homes. Only essential businesses are open like pharmacies, gas stations and supermarkets. Malls are all closed as we try and stop this highly contagious disease from spreading, but we didn't do a good job early on and we are now paying for our lackluster job.

All schools are closed and I know in a number of states, including Massachusetts, the earliest they will open is May 4th, but that may get extended.

This is my two cents and I won't be commenting on those that wish to attack this post as it will serve no purpose.

Take care and be well.

Thank you Tasmania Racing
We will get through this

All racing in Tassy Closed for 4 weeks ..

EXTERNAL LINK

2 April 2020

Jane Howlett, Minister for Racing

Racing to cease in Tasmania

These are difficult times for all Tasmanians, and today our Government made the tough decision to cease all racing in the State from this point forward.

I can assure you, this decision was not taken lightly as Tasmanias racing industry supports thousands of jobs in rural and regional communities, injecting around $103 million a year into the States economy.

I acknowledge this will come as a heavy blow to the 5,000 participants across the three racing codes, many of whom are reliant on the industry for their primary incomes.

However, the health and safety of all Tasmanians must come first, and the public health advice I have received indicates todays decision is a necessary one.

The Premier and I have spoken with Tasracing about this decision and a support package will be announced in the coming days that will assist industry participants and maintain the welfare of our racing animals.

Many industry participants will also be eligible for the assistance packages for businesses and individuals already announced by the Tasmanian and Australian Governments over recent weeks.

Although race meets will be cancelled for at least the next four weeks, it is vital that the welfare of racing animals is maintained. Thats why those industry participants who are essential in ensuring that welfare will be able to continue their important work. This includes veterinarians, farriers and those who feed the racing animals and keep them fit and healthy.

Details on the specific support that Tasracing will receive will be announced in the coming days.

Tasracing will work closely with the Minister for Racing on the detail of a support package for the Tasmanian racing industry following todays announcement that it will cease for the next four weeks.

CEO Paul Eriksson said these details would be announced as soon as they were finalised.

Many industry participants will be eligible for assistance measures already announced by the Tasmanian Government and the Commonwealth over recent weeks, both to businesses and individuals, he said.

Mr Eriksson said he noted the Premier comments that the public health advice about the industry continuing to operate was clear, and while disappointed, the government had little choice but to follow that advice.

Animal welfare will be a key issue for the industry to manage during this shutdown period, he said.

These racing animals are high-performance athletes and their care, exercising and maintenance is a 24 hour, 7 days a week task.

Stopping racing does not stop this need lower exercise regimes which this shut down will enforce could contribute to other issues upon our return.

It should be remembered that the cessation of racing is not just for the currently identified four week period it will also include an extra four to 12 weeks to get the animal back into racing condition.

While race and trial meetings will be cancelled for at least the next four weeks, those industry participants who are essential for the welfare of racing animals will be able to continue their important work.

was listening to a Dr from here who now worked in Singapore where they have one of the lowest infection rates say, the mistake we are making is that we aren't isolating people who have tested positive correctly...they apparently took those people out of the community to an isolation area and they weren't allowed to leave until they had 2 or 3 negative swabs.

Ryan,

I know here in the U.S. a person needs to have two negative swabs either 24 or 48 apart, can't remember which.

On a more somber note the Governor of New York announced yesterday that probably in the next day or two they will tell EMT drivers that if they go on a call for a heart attack, or any emergency, and the patient isn't breathing if they can't get a pulse not to bring the person to the hospital.

Here, and probably in most countries, EMT's don't declare a warm body dead, it isn't their job. Their job is to work on the body in the ambulance and turn the body over to the doctors at the hospital so they can try to revive the patient.
