When rules and regulations are put on owners. Then the responsibility falls on the governing body, to provide adequate exit strategies on the path to rename. The longevity and health of the industry relies on it and that falls firmly on the administration of the sport.

Theyve finally realised it and have started looking at pathways. Hopefully it gets sorted the next 12 months. With 7-8 billion people on the planet. It should be a very easy fix!!

They don't need to take responsibility, Owners are bestowed the responsibility as soon as they breed or buy a pup, racer or broodie.

Unless they are able to sell the dog, give it away or place it in a rehoming facility, it is always their responsibility from the time they own it until the time they don't

We know this already.

What I am saying is that for the greyhound racing train to keep progressing, owners who don;t breed or have the space or time to look after them the dogs when finished racing NEED ASSISTANCE in rehoming their dogs, which CUURENTLY is NOT being provided

This will lead to owners being stuck with dogs that they are paying for that aren't racing and eventually as this builds up there will be less new investment in the sport regardless of the prizemoney.

The problems behind the scenes are choking the sport

Breeding has exploded, which generally is not a bad thing, but it is under the CURRENT circumstances as the outlets for rehoming are getting tighter and tighter

Hard to get into rearers, hard to get into breakers, hard to get into trainers unless your dog breaks in or pre trainers very well

Why? because at every point there are retirees taking up these spaces (not so much with the breakers)

I have heard of trainers now not taking dogs unless the owner has a plan for them if the dog is not up to scratch or gets injured and can't race for an extended period of time

We are seeing it now, pups aren't moving. Maybe the real high end pups are , but generally well bred pups by a decent sire from a city winner are going for as low as $2,000 and being left on the shelf

I reiterate its not a Qld issue, its Australia-wide issue and I reckon all the State associations with GA need to get together to find a solution that suits all States

I see it as a huge problem. maybe people don't share or want to share my view and that's fine, everyone has their own opinion

Sandro, plenty dont take responsibility at all.
Thats a fact.
Paying for a trainer to keep a dog is the soft option plenty take these days, which limits the trainers options-this is something that came up recently on that other forum and most trainers said theyd had it happen to them but then, maybe they need to have something agreed upon before taking the dog on.

Exactly what I said, proper exit strategies need to be provided. When special regulations are put on the racing greyhound breed. Where any pet dog can be dumped in a park and euthanised by the RSPCA.

Not many owners wouldnt think the foundations are their responsibilities. But, avenues need to be created by the governing bodies!

A mate was telling Greyhounds Queensland pay for a vet check and desexing before rehoming I think it was. That seems like a positive initiative.

It is, no doubt about that

But so do NSW, we are still struggling to rehome greyhounds

The five most important parts of the greyhound industry at the moment are rehoming, animal welfare, rehoming, animal welfare and rehoming.

QR refund owners approximately 70% of the desexing and teeth cleaning veterinary costs.
