Does anybody have any ideas on any products for calming excitable keen hounds prior to racing. There are many on the market but not sure which ones or their active ingredient works best. Most of them seem to be for anxiety , separation , fireworks etc. All comments will be appreciated. Obviously they would be not swab. Cheers

Hi Michael. Just a comment here that may help you. The amino acid L-TRYPTOPHEN is proven to work on greyhounds that may be overly excitable types. I hope this may assist. All the best m8.

That is in Good as Gold powder, as well as Vit E and B1. Works well.

Thanks Carole, Kenneth and Steve. I have noticed that L - Tryptophan was an active ingredient in many of the calming products but wasnt sure how much to give and when. Carole I will see if I can get the good as gold powder before the weekend. I did look at it once before but thought it was only for horses. How much and how long before kennelling do you administer or is it a daily supplement. Its not for me but an old friend whos maiden bitch is running a race in the kennels. Pretty sure he hasnt tried it. I will also mention the ginger Kenneth as that will be easy to get in a hurry in his area compared to the other products. How much do you give and how often. Are they in tablet form mate. Once again thanks for your I put and taking the time to help. Stay safe. Cheers

Michael, we haven't used it for quite a while, but the product is available in sachets for dogs. The instructions are on the packet and it is not expensive. You can buy it online, so it is well worth giving it a try Good luck.

The compression suits are used by a lot of the professional trainers. Must be effective for them to use them.

Michael, If you are going to go the way of L Tryptophan i suggest you use 5htp or 5 hydroxytryptophan. It works better as the system processes it better. But only a small dosage. I would give it to the dog while at home in the kennels first to see how the dog goes. You can buy that from the link i sent you also.

Mitchell is on the money. It's the precursor to produce L-Tryptophan and more bio available.

Dogs that respond to it respond well, sometimes a little too well (as in blow their starts). Some dogs don't respond to tryptophan at all whether it's 5HTP or Gold as Gold paste.

For dogs that dont respond and calm with 5HTP there are only two options I know of that work - one is a compression suit as mentioned above in this thread and the other is a pheromone spray called Adaptil. You basically spray it all over their kennel mat and see if they like it at home. If so go with the pheromone spray. Its basically a synthetic of what lactating mothers produce to calm their puppies.

* A word of caution on 5HTP/L-Trytophan - it should never ever be given if a dog is on Reconcile (Prozac) or any other SSRI medication. There are warnings on most products about this but combining anything that messes with serotonin levels together is a very bad idea.

Thanks guys, great info, Ive got some reading to do. Really appreciate you sharing this info. I know some dogs settle once in the routine of racing and she may do the same. Ive seen the Adaptil Jason and must admit I was sceptical so its good to know it does work for some. Ill get him to try a combination of the above mentioned ideas and see which works best for her. She actually won her Maiden Heat on the weekend in good time and is in the final this weekend. I think well wait to try anything orally until after the weekend. He did give her a couple of ginger tablets last weekend but not sure it had much effect on excitability? but she did win? Thanks heaps guys. Cheers
