p.s. he hasnt worried about the carpet, hes good with that ( thank goodness). Whereas another dog I had, tore that off, that was more work of course. But he passed GAP and it was beautiful to see him enjoying the moment. For both him ( joy frolicking around with others) and me (sanity reasons)!
Sheez appreciate those that are so tidy in their rooms and understand the real concept of their normal beds.
Did get a female that started ripping into bed, put new top part on frame ,replacement mat, sprayed it with a dog flea spray I had (one with mothy stuff smell) , did it a couple of times, perfect hasnt touched it since. Havent officially raced her, as I dont think she is racing material, licks herself too much. Had her for a while now, probably just put her in GAP, think about her in race kennels of course, did put her in trial kennels a few times, she was not too bad in there. But a lot of time has passed since I got her.

In racing - you can get an exemption to not have bedding in their kennels. I need it for the example I gave earlier in this thread. Better she await her races on cold steel than eating foam and/or throwing her neck out munging out on stuff or attempting to when a yard muzzle is applied to stop her destroying her bedding while waiting to race.
At home it's heaps easier to stop them turning their bedding into the latest play toy... two words 'Chilli Flakes'... sprinkle some over the bedding and watch them stop! Bedding becomes bedding and toys or other fluff are just toys from that point on.
I have just recently heard of that exemption, its not something I warm to. Quite a few trainers are disappointed that they cant use a blanket or other alternative, some may of even used a piece of carpet, everyone knows their dogs and what they are ok with. But it was termed as a health and safety concern. If they are relaxed, whats the problem. The nothing at all in there approval to me, is not a greater choice for him, I understand the concept but I would prefer the bit of comfort for him especially if up to race 12 waiting. If people brought their bedding in a secured approved bag or something that would contain it neatly, then does that resolve the health and safety concern. I am not 100 per cent happy with having to muzzle him in racing muzzle but it is my next best choice. Last dog I put in one of the yard (think thats the name, definitely approved by GRV to use)muzzles, like the plastic more contained one, his was the blue size, the dog jumped out 3 lengths slower - never ever done that before and afterwards thinking about it - too stressful for him, wont ever use it again, he would have been pissed off to the max with that contraption on, but I tried it, as I got told with his blanket could not be used in race kennel anymore. His not with me any longer (in gap) but I suppose you just do the best you can with what you get given as choices. Then just resorted to race muzzle, it would come out a bit mangled. But he never came out that behind again with his jump.
Wow does the chili flakes stay in their memory for ever and ever, think Im gonna try one first. I suppose its like the flea spray, it stopped her and its been quite sometime now and she has been great with her bed. Cheers

No-one bothered answering you Jeanette so I will.
The reason that having an exemption in place for "pillow biters" is to prevent them from doing further harm to themselves by a) ingesting their bedding b) throwing neck and spine out trying to eat bedding when muzzled
Some dogs truly go berko waiting for their races and it is the most humane solution to have them just wait on steel for their race. It's maybe two hours to put up with that maximum which is way better than them getting hurt alternatively. I'll bet you still they will do something idiotic like eat the mesh and wires in their kennels attempting an escape even without the blanket/rug/mat etc. Some dogs are this insane pre-race. Not many but I've certainly encountered enough to factor them in to every race meeting those insane dogs even when they are kenneled next to mine. If there's a calming technique that works it makes for a way calmer and saner kennel environment pre-race.
And yeah Chilli flakes works 90% of the time. There's always 10 percentile weirdo dogs that just don't care. I normally use Chili flakes to stop a dog licking its bandage before an Elizabethan collar (e-Collar) but also on bedding with new arrivals to the kennel that I've been forewarned love to tear up their bedding.
