Anyone have any answers to dogs have seizures after running over certain distances ?

I'm struggling to remember the dogs name, but I recall a dog racing in SE QLD a decade or so ago. He would completely tense up in the catching pen after the race and fall over stiff as a board. It was quite distressing to watch, but within 30 seconds he was up and about good as gold.

I have no experience myself but I've witnessed few dogs having symptoms. They suffered exercise-induced hyperthermia (EIH). Hope this helps.

After speaking to many people about it I've found its more common than I expected. And yes its very distressing to watch especially when they go into full siezure as well. I'm hoping that someone will offer advice for a magic cure ..

I thought it was a form of asphyxia, something about holding their breath during the race. The tensing of the body and collapsing was the trigger for them to take their next breath again. Apparently it had no long term effects on the dog and there isn't a cure for it.

Theres actually a stayer for sale on page 3 of dogs for sale who has had these issues. Without naming anyone it will be easy to find and may be worthwhile contacting the seller to see if they have been able to sort the issue or any treatments available. Hope this helps. Cheers

Not a magic cure, but I've seen trainers here have put an ice pack on dogs head and neck immediately at the pick up to cool down the dogs brains and neck's large blood vessels. That has helped to prevent the full seizure.

Just asking - has there been any research done re the training regime the dogs have worked thru ie a heavy work load or a strait from the kennel race?

Thank you , going by the advert the dog is still experiencing the problem but I appreciate the input.

I've tried different methods of workload / weight change / dietry changes and suppliments but so far nothing has helped.

I had one not go into full seizures but would have to be held up otherwise legs would want to give,and would have to wait before walking as her legs would be all wobbly and she would look a bit blank for a minute,after a drink and a rest for for a couple of minutes it was like she was ready to go again.Heat,humidity,iron and distance were the issues,in my case 20-30m in distance was a big difference between a dog that seemed keen to want to keep going and a dog that struggled to stay upright afterwards.Vet picked up the iron issue after full bloods were done

with some seizures the dog has a problem getting enough air. only with some dogs in the throat a flap of skin floats loosely and blocks the airway . a common problem in some horses. the flap is usually sewn back and alls good

He can run a strong 450m with no trouble , but that extra to get to 520m is too far for him without going into seizure. We have done bloods Iron levels are 8.6 so no problem there. Apart from Magnesium level being a bit higher than normal everything is perfect.

Robyn, I have experienced this three times in 10 years in different dogs each were tested & found they were carrying a dormant virus in their system which was diagnosed & treated over a 14 day period then retested & retreated if virus was still present. I believe antibiotics treat the symptoms of the virus but doesnt get rid of the virus which can stay in the dogs system for years & can raise its head when they are under pressure. The last one was in with a reputable pretrainer & was fitting in the catching pen, we treated her & she never fitted again & turned out the best of that batch.
Not an expensive treatment & no vet involved & no ongoing treatment. Cant guarantee u will get the same results as me but could be worth trying.

Elongated soft palate is generally a brachy breed problem , but can occur occasionally in other breeds . Its not my boys problem sadly. Thank you for your input
