I have a question.

When training a dog for 50/50 of Prizemoney and the dog wins a top class Group Race race, does the trainer get 50% of the winners check? So would the trainer get $125k for training the winner of the GEE?

By the sounds of it, the owners get the other half.

I've never had a dog good enough for it to happen, so I always wondered.

Thanks Andy

You would think that a 50/50 deal is just that regardless of prize money. Any other deal is what it is. If youre only racing in the country ,some owners only take first and second etc etc. A deal is what is stated at the start of the agreement and if in doubt have both parties sign a written agreement. Really you should honour what you say. JMO . Cheers

Greed sets in with some people and they try to re negotiate the terms, then come the other trainers like hawks circling pissing in the owners ear that they will do it for a less percentage. Ive seen it happen often. Best to get arrangements in writing.

It was actually $150k for trainer of the GEE winner then, at the other end of spectrum you have $150 for a maiden win (50%) at Moree or Coonamble. Theres only one GEE winner each year so it pays a few bills and then some ha ha

As a side note. The top tier trainers are very fortunate in that they get to pick and choose from the very best break-ins. If a dog doesn't measure up or gets injured, they can just go back to the production line and get the next one. They have earned that right of course. But I really admire the breeder/trainers who battle away with ordinary dogs. If that's all they have at the time. They have to do their best with the slow ones. Hoping they can breed their own champions in the future.

Having been on both sides of the owning/training fence and now working with thoroughbreds, I cannot think of a better way to do it than 50/50.
One of my trainers won a $25k race. More than happy to split that. They drove 1500km return trips on a few occasions trying to win big races, for no return. Those trips didn't cost me anything. They deserve every cent of it.
The amount of time and effort (and money) that trainers put into winning races for owners can never be understood by someone who has not done it.
At the bottom end it can be different. A poor performing dog is never going to give a profitable return to the trainer so this is where an owner has to agree to give 3rd place or first $100 etc to the trainer, otherwise your dog won't be running.
The best thing an owner can do for a trainer is leave the trainer alone and just sit back at the pub and watch when the dog races, or go to the track if its racing locally, and enjoy the thrill of watching your dog race. And be grateful whenever any prizemoney comes in.
Working with racehorses, there is a huge difference. Owners pay massive weekly training fees for horses and collect a much larger percentage of prizemoney, therefore they get to have more of a say in where the horse races.
Greyhound trainers cannot survive financially unless they win races.
If they happen to win a G1 and get half the big bikkies, good on them. Most would probably upgrade the van, new walking machine, buy a Fernando straw and a few pups etc.

Another question. Is it 50% of all prizemoney goes to the owners or is it 50% of wins only?

would be interesting to see what would happen if a top trainer decided to start charging training fees instead of the 50/50 split ?? i for one would be very keen to look at sending my pups/dogs there .

Hi Paul,

Im not sure if everyone is the same, but we have a 50/50 deal on all prize money. We just complete the contract form from racing Queensland and the prize money comes to owner and trainer already split. Makes it easier than having to complete a bank transfer for the 50%.

GRNSW has the same method and the split, any way both parties want it to be e.g. 30% / 70% is agreed upon by both parties.

Ours charges a weekly fee and a lesser percentage of prizemoney which is fantastic with a quality dog, and if its just a decent one, they receive the weekly fees so i think its pretty fair.
