I am interested in peoples thoughts regarding the inclusion of an aged 4yrs+ race at EVERY meeting drawn. I strongly believe this would be a real incentive to keep dogs going that may have lost a couple of lengths over the years, it may also take some pressure off the GAP.

More and more we are hearing of pups being late maturer's so maybe it would also be logical to race these late maturer's until a riper age?

Many veterans are retired because of the grading system not because they were injured, if there was an aged event available at every meeting who knows, greyhounds may race at 6 or 7 years of age. Not to mention win a couple of bucks along the way.

Both tennis and golf have a seniors tour so why not greyhound racing?

Brett,

If that is the case the betting fraternity don't have a problem with it as WA are probably the second most go ahead particpants in AUS.

(I realise your comment was tongue in cheek)

We have been conducting veterans races down in Vic for a while now, was slow response from clubs to put them on , but lately they seem to be bobbing up with 3-4 races per week, gives the oldies a chance to race in a grade and run for good money.

Mind you there is still some decent 4 year olds around, but from memory i think there is a clause for nominating ,eg metro wins etc

I am surprised by the amount of interest (not) in keeping the oldies going.

I for one would support 'Vets' races, one of mine is 4 1/2 years old, and now is the time the he should really be dropping down the grades, he loves to race but rarely troubles the scorer at his current grade BUT because he is well known at the track they will not drop him far enough to give him a decent chance of a win.

In reality I suppose its my problem more than his, but with run money being so low it is not sensible to keep paying the kennel bills.

He is only running at the moment until his new owners are properly ready to look after him (they have a lab in season).

So for me Vets racing would be fantastic, (as long as they were graded properly lol)

What you are stating is typical of most hobby trainers IMO.

The difference between the oldies performing well or struggling is the grading system. There are States in the US where greyhound racing is banned, we are in a position to make certain this never occurs in our region/s.

Brian,

The only track up here that holds veterans races is Capalaba.

I know it's an old chestnut, but, sooner or later our industry is going to come under enormous pressure from outside parties and i think we should all be pro-active rather than re-active in this area.

I for one am going to begin lobbying clubs and the board to start programming these events.

I believe there would be many more participants in the greyhound industry if we established a policy which encouraged competitive aged racing. With the right policy and plenty of races programmed the greyhound career may go on for say 4 or 5 years.

Obviously the returns available on greyhound purchases would improve with the advent of these types of events.

Why not group racing for aged greyhounds? The other consideration should be, implementing this type of policy gives the true bread and butter battlers a chance at being rewarded for their real love of the greyhound and the sport of greyhound racing.

I just watched a dog named Under Advice race and qualify for the final of the Bundaberg Cup final next week. The dog turns 7 years old in December. My question is, has anyone out there got any dogs still competing as well as this dog being as old or older, or even just still racing?

In mainland Europe the kennel club allows dogs to compete in veteran races over the short course (300meters) up to the age of 8 years old. This is common although most owners retire them at 6 years. These races have been going on for years.

Early this year i noticed that The gardens had 5+ races. I thought it was a great idea. I cant see why they cant program 4 1/2+, 5+, 5 1/2+ etc races more often. They should have those sorta races for dogs that want to race but might not be overly competitive anymore against the younger ones. Even if they did them on non tab or tab c money. If they wanted to go a step further they could make handicaps for them. 4 1/2 gets +5m. 5 gets +6.5m 5 1/2 gets 8m etc. They could start on those marks and lose 0.5 or 1m each time they get home. Alot of old dogs around that are sound and are keen but just cant compete against the younger ones.

great idea mitchell the only problem there usually not a great deal of noms for veteran races.i also believe 4 is abit young 4 1/2 would be a good age to be classed as a veteran,i was in a veteran race once that had a dog that had just been in a group final,it had just turned 4.

Top effort for a strike rate like that with an older dog John. You must be proud of him.
